Mintera and Acreo Demonstrate Long-Haul Optical Transport Connection at 40 Gigabits
per Second and will exhibit jointly at ECOC in Stockholm, Sweden

Successful demonstration of “Plug and Play” capability of 40 Gbps wavelengths using a 2.5/10 Gbps
line system over 820 km standard single-mode fiber

September 1, 2004: Mintera Corporation, the technology leader enabling migration to 40 Gigabit per second (Gbps) optical transport in metro-core, regional, and long-haul networks, and Acreo, a leading Swedish research and development institute operating the Swedish National Broadband Test-bed, announced the successful demonstration of plug and play integration of 40 Gbps wavelengths on a 2.5 Gbps line system over 820 km of installed standard single-mode fiber.

The technology trial utilized a fiber link running from Kista in Stockholm to Hudiksvall, north of Stockholm, and back to Kista. Mintera’s 40 Gbps terminal plugged into a commercial 2.5/10 Gbps system and simultaneously ran 40 Gbps traffic along with 2.5 Gbps traffic without any modifications to the existing in-line amplifiers, dispersion compensation or optical MUX/DMUX infrastructure. The 40 Gbps wavelength was up and running in less than an hour, and error-free performance with 9 dB of margin was measured over the one-week trial period.

“We were very thrilled to see how easily and quickly Mintera could overlay the 40 Gbps wavelength on our existing line system, it was truly plug and-play”, said Acreo’s Anders Berntson, the project leader for the field demonstration.

“This trial confirms the viability of Mintera’s 40 Gbps technology over existing line systems”, said Mintera’s CEO, Terry Unter. “Mintera’s optical transport equipment allows carriers to install 40 Gbps wavelengths seamlessly and without traffic interruption on their deployed infrastructure. This enables carriers to maximize the return on current investments by providing a cost-effective service and capacity upgrade of the existing infrastructure”.
“We were pleased to participate in Acreo’s test bed and greatly appreciated the opportunity to generate new data” said Benny Mikkelsen, Vice President-Systems and Technology at Mintera. ”Acreo’s test bed is an opportunity for us to demonstrate an infrastructure which enables future broadband services.”

A live demonstration of the field trial, now extended to 874 km, can be seen at the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) in Stockholm, Sweden, from September 6th to 8th 2004. Mintera’s 40 Gbps transport equipment will be placed in Acreo’s booth (#305) and connected directly to the 874 km field fiber between Stockholm and Hudiksvall. “We believe this is a great opportunity for Carriers and Service providers to see the world’s first live long-haul field trial at 40 Gbps, and see with their own eyes that 40 Gbps is ready for deployment”, stated Acreo’s Anders Berntson.
